How Exercise and Brain Function Work Together

Exercise and brain function are closely related. While it may not be obvious at first, numerous studies have shown links between the two. If you want to have a healthy brain, build a healthy body. The Brain – Your Body’s Biggest Muscle

People typically do not think of the brain as a muscle. The truth is, the brain is a lot like a muscle. About a fifth of our caloric intake is used to power the brain. The more it is used, the stronger it becomes. This comes with a number of benefits, such as enhanced reasoning abilities and/or a stronger sense of self-control. While most muscles control movement, the brain controls other things. It monitors the senses, controls the muscles and the organs, responds to chemical changes. These functions improve with exercise, along with the body.

The Relationship Between Exercise and Brain Function

Even on a very basic level, exercise affects the brain. The stimulation of the muscles increases heart rate. This increases the flow of oxygen to the brain. More oxygen makes the brain operate more efficiently. Other direct effects include chemical and hormonal changes. Exercise causes the brain to release endorphins into the bloodstream. Additionally, exercise also changes the balance of chemicals in the brain in a way that promotes brain growth.  However, there’s more. Exercise has been shown to improve memory, focus, and hand/eye coordination. Think muscle memory. Think reduced stress.

The End Result

At this point, you might be wondering what role the brain plays in this. It’s simple: a stronger brain means a stronger body. As the effectiveness of the brain improves, so too do the bodily functions.

Getting the Most From Your Workout

Fortunately, there’s good news. You don’t need to develop separate workouts for your brain. It’s better to incorporate them into your existing fitness routine. Aerobic exercise in particular strengthens the brain. In addition to strengthening your body, they help with mental function. Cardio exercises are also helpful; put simply, any exercise that is good for your heart is also good for your brain.

Exercise and brain function go hand in hand. Aerobic exercises can improve quality of life mentally and physically. Exercise can help with mental issues, including stress and anxiety while conditioning your muscles. Your body will feel great. Your mind will feel great.
